Budget 2024

Tax and spend fiscal plan will inhibit growth

Today’s Speech from the Throne recognizes that a healthy economy requires a healthy population.  All of us – governments, businesses, workers, Canadians in every corner of the country – need to do our part to keep COVID-19 in check.

In this new session of Parliament we urge all parties to work together to address the health emergency and help Canadians through this unprecedented crisis.  The fall economic statement must deliver a fiscally responsible and disciplined plan to restore confidence, promote investment and spur job creation.

As the Throne Speech acknowledged, hard-hit sectors such as travel, tourism and hospitality require urgent relief.  We also welcome the commitment to action on: harnessing the know-how of Canada’s energy and resource sectors to help the country achieve its climate goals; improving access to affordable childcare so more parents can participate fully in the workforce; investing in physical and digital infrastructure and in the skills of Canadian workers.

Over the past several months companies across the country have proven that it is possible to operate safely and responsibly, producing goods and services Canadians need, while providing much-needed employment. We were pleased that the Speech recognized the extraordinary efforts of Canada’s dynamic businesses to support the ongoing fight against COVID-19.  Business leaders remain committed to working in partnership with all stakeholders to contain the virus and grow the economy.
