Joining together, several Canadian companies, led by ConocoPhillips Canada, have sponsored half of a a $20 million “XPrize” competition. The idea is to accelerate the development of breakthrough technologies that can take waste carbon dioxide streams from industrial facilities, and turn them into valuable and useful items, from t-shirts to toothpaste.

Potential uses include alternative forms of building materials, low-carbon transportation fuels and entirely new products.
