It is unfortunate that the United States has decided to violate the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement by imposing tariffs on Canada, creating economic harm for both Canadians and Americans. There are three actions our country can and should take right now to respond.

  • First, this is a wakeup call for our country. For too long, successive governments have been complacent around strengthening Canada’s long term economic growth and productivity. Now we must act with urgency. There is much within our own control including embracing an innovation economy, ensuring an internationally competitive tax regime, reducing the regulatory burden on job-creators, and eliminating the internal trade barriers that create tariffs within our own federation.
  • Second, it is in Canada’s best interests to have a strong and secure border and to invest in our nation’s defence. Government representatives must continue to demonstrate the tangible action we are taking to maintain and enhance the security of our shared border.
  • Finally, when considering retaliatory measures, our political leaders must use caution. Our goal should be to impose the least amount of economic harm on Canadians. Over time, widespread retaliatory tariffs would amount to permanent higher taxes on every Canadian.
