Now is the time to take action

In response to the U.S. decision to delay proposed tariffs for 30 days, the Business Council issued a statement urging Canada to take action and strengthen its economic resilience in the face of global uncertainties.

“Now is the time for action.”

Goldy Hyder, President and Chief Executive Officer, Business Council of Canada

“[Canada must] “act with urgency to improve our long-term economic prospects.””

Goldy Hyder, President and Chief Executive Officer, Business Council of Canada

“The problem is math. Price becomes a choke point. When something is not viable anymore, it just breaks down.”

Robert Asselin, Senior Vice President, Business Council of Canada

“ Canada has to really move quickly to create confidence by introducing policies that will lure capital to deploy here.”

Goldy Hyder, President and Chief Executive Officer, Business Council of Canada

“I want to emphasize that this doesn’t remove the uncertainty, in fact one could argue that the uncertainty in itself is a tariff.”

Robert Asselin, Senior Vice President, Business Council of Canada

« Nous avons un sursis, mais il reste qu’il y a encore de l’incertitude pour les entreprises et les travailleurs. Ils savent bien que ce n’est pas fini. »

Robert Asselin, Senior Vice President, Business Council of Canada

“Regardless of what happens next, it is clear that Canada needs to act with urgency to improve our long-term economic prospects.”

Goldy Hyder, President and Chief Executive Officer, Business Council of Canada

« C’est un exemple très concret que l’offre canadienne joue beaucoup sur le prix à la pompe aux États-Unis. »

Robert Asselin, Senior Vice President, Business Council of Canada

“So sure, we can start making alliances with other countries and exporting our natural resources to Asia a bit more and building capacity to do so. But at the end, we thought the best way would be to kind of agree with the Americans that there’s a path forward and that each country can find benefits in this relationship.”

Robert Asselin, Senior Vice President, Business Council of Canada

“[Even after the pause on tariffs], “much uncertainty remains.””

Goldy Hyder, President and Chief Executive Officer, Business Council of Canada

« Il faudrait lancer ces consultations maintenant. Il faut être prêt à mettre en œuvre ces tarifs dès que l’on peut, même si je doute que nos tarifs puissent le faire reculer. En même temps, si on veut les mettre en œuvre, aussi bien être prêts. Il n’y a pas vraiment de logique à ne pas entreprendre les consultations. »

Robert Asselin, Senior Vice President, Business Council of Canada
