Business leaders welcome Canada’s application to the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity

Statement by Goldy Hyder, President and CEO of the Business Council of Canada

Canada’s business leaders applaud today’s announcement by Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly that Canada will apply to join the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF). The Business Council of Canada (BCC) also welcomes the statement by U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that the United States supports Canada’s admission.

The BCC has strongly favoured Canadian membership in IPEF since it was unveiled by U.S. President Joe Biden in May. Joining IPEF will enhance Canada’s credibility in the region and strengthen our economic ties with the U.S., Australia, Brunei, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

We also look forward to hearing further details about the Canada-U.S. Strategic Dialogue on the Indo-Pacific announced by Minister Joly. As economic and strategic partners, Canada and the U.S. must work together in the Indo-Pacific region as we deepen ties with other Pacific allies.
