Business Council of Canada welcomes new immigration plan
Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino’s plan to increase the number of new permanent residents coming to Canada over the next three years will help to strengthen the country’s economy at a crucial time.
There is widespread agreement across party lines that immigration is essential to long-term economic growth. Newcomers bring energy, skills, new ideas and entrepreneurial spirit. They start companies, fill skill shortages, buy houses and pay taxes.
COVID-19-related travel restrictions have hit Canada’s immigration system hard this year, significantly reducing the number of new arrivals. The Minister’s plan will allow Canada to make up lost ground as the pandemic eases. It will inject new dynamism into our economy when we need it most.
In our new report “Powering a strong recovery: An economic growth plan for Canada” we highlight the role Canada’s immigration system plays in attracting new talent and expanding the country’s economic capacity. The 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan is a welcome step forward.
